Shostakovich's Symphony No 5 was written during a time of great political turmoil when the Soviet Union was under the rule of Joseph Stalin. You'll hear hyper-militaristic marches and triumphant, crowd-pleasing brass melodies. But you’ll also hear moments of beauty and sadness. It's like Shostakovich was trying to express all of his feelings about living under Stalin's rule in one piece of music.
